The National Working Group of the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) National Chapter Thailand has finalised the vision “To become the premier forum for driving sustainability in rice” for the SRP National Chapter:
Hosted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and chaired by the Thai Rice Department at its offices, nearly twenty rice stakeholders from the academic, public and private sectors joined in the second meeting of the National Working Group to identify and plan three activities to jointly implement to advance sustainable rice production in Thailand:
The SRP National Chapter aims to implement these activities until December 2021 in a bid to enhance recognition of SRP – from smallholders to consumers – in Thailand. The target is to reach 100,000 rice farmers across the country to apply best practices according to the SRP Standard for Sustainable Rice Cultivation. Of the total target, 10,000 farmers are expected to undergo external verification to demonstrate compliance against the SRP Standard to meet market demand for sustainably grown rice.
Institutions active in the national working group include: Agricultural and Food Marketing Association for Asia and Pacific, Asian Institute of Technology, Bayer, Control Union, Corteva Agriscience, Foodtech Solutions, GIZ, GLOBALG.A.P., Herba Bangkok (Ebro Foods), Kasetsart University, KHAO C.P. Company Limited, National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards, National Science and Technology Development Agency, Olam International, Rice Department, and Syngenta.
- Engage the Ministry of Commerce, Thai Rice Exporters Association and Thai Rice Mills Association, and the Farmer Parliament to actively participate in the SRP National Chapter Thailand;
- Develop training curriculum and materials on SRP in Thai language to raise awareness of and capacity to adopt sustainable rice production practices by smallholder farmers and rice sector stakeholders; and
- Develop key messages and communications materials on SRP for common use, and tailor messages for different target audiences.
