GIZ-NSM scales up the world of learning on climate-smart sustainable rice farming to youth and Thai public

Nonthaburi — Mr Suwarong Wongsiri, Acting Director of the National Science Museum (NSM), signed a memorandum of understanding with Dr Nana Kuenkel, Agriculture and Food Cluster Coordinator, on behalf of GIZ Thailand Country Director, under the project “Youth and Public Awareness Program on Climate-Smart and Sustainable Rice Farming.” This initiative aims to disseminate knowledge on environment-friendly rice production and raise awareness on sustainable agriculture among youth, teachers, farmers, and the general public nationwide. The project also includes diverse learning activities and accessible science communication toolkits to promote better, more sustainable farming with long-term positive social impact. Executives from both organisations participated in the signing ceremony held at Phoenix 4 Room, IMPACT Convention Centre, Muang Thong Thani.

Mr Suwarong Wongsiri said, “This collaboration combines GIZ’s knowledge and experience in climate-friendly agriculture with NSM’s expertise in science communication and learning experience design to make complex issues easy to understand, fun, and relevant to daily life particularly youth, teachers, farmers, consumers, and the public. Everyone can participate in driving a sustainable rice production systems from farm to fork in an effort to reduce environmental impact. This ‘Sustainable Rice’ exhibition at NST Fair 2026 is the starting point for expanding knowledge on climate-smart agriculture to the target youth and society. A series of activities will soon follow, including taking this exhibition mobile through the NSTDA Science Caravan, launching of the RICE RANGER knowledge toolkits in primary schools, as well as knowledge dissemination through online media and science articles. So, learning can continue being accessible among schools, communities, and agricultural areas throughout the country.”

Dr Nana Kuenkel, Agriculture and Food Cluster Coordinator, GIZ Thailand, said “GIZ is committed to supporting Thailand in driving the transition to climate-friendly agriculture, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthening food security. This collaboration with NSM is a significant opportunity to disseminate knowledge on sustainable rice production to youth and the Thai public through accessible and engaging learning processes, inspiring the next generation to further develop the agricultural sector with innovation. Following the exhibition at NST Fair 2026, activities will be expanded to other regions, particularly Chiang Rai and Ubon Ratchathani provinces, where GIZ’s agricultural projects are currently underway, with plans to extend to a total of 21 provinces in the central, northern, and northeastern regions. This will create learning spaces and facilitate the exchange of perspectives among farmers, consumers, and the younger generation. We hope this collaboration will lead to deeper understanding and tangible behavioural changes, opening opportunities for all sectors to participate in driving a sustainable rice production system. We hope the collaboration will ultimately strengthen the Thai agricultural sector with innovation, science and technology.” ■
