Despite agriculture being traditionally perceived as an exclusive domain for straight men, Pratya “Prat” Rattanabanditserves as a testament to how unwavering determination to learn can foster acceptance of gender diversity.

Empowered by the Sustainable Palm Oil and Oil Palm Production Project (SPOPP), Prat gained a comprehensive understanding of sustainable palm oil production and plantation management skills, enabling him to increase productivity. Prat dedicates himself to sharing knowledge beyond his family, reaching over 400 farmers in the community and inspiring countless individuals through his unwavering commitment and passion.

Pratya Rattanabandit, also known as Prat, stands as a beacon of resilience and open-mindedness, challenging gender stereotypes in the agricultural sector which is traditionally perceived as an exclusive domain for straight men. Despite initial doubts from community members who questioned his ability to manage a palm oil plantation, Prat persevered, proving that passion and determination can overcome societal barriers.

Growing up in a family of palm oil farmers in Chumphon province, Prat was not interested in following this path. He therefore decided to leave his hometown and pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics, majoring in Marketing Economics at Rangsit University in 2015. After completing his undergraduate degree, Prat landed a dream job at the headquarters of a private banking company. After years of working, he realised that working in a big city was not fullfilling his dream and so resigned and returned home to start a new chapter of his life and search for what he really wanted. Prat’s cheerful personality and strong interpersonal skills won him a job in the procurement department of a palm oil mill in Chumphon Province. Despite his initial lack of confidence stemming from his lack of familiarity with the palm oil industry, he embraced the challenge.

Driven by a desire to continuously develop himself professionally, Prat decided to participate in the Sustainable Palm Oil Production and Procurement (SPOPP) project in 2022 as a trainer. His aim was to gain further knowledge and prove his capabilities to his family. Through this project, Prat delved into the intricacies of sustainable palm oil production and emerged with an in-depth understanding of palm oil plantation management. The newly acquired knowledge and skills transformed Prat’s perspective on agriculture, which he once perceived as a challenging and overwhelming endeavour. Empowered by his newfound confidence, Prat was eager to apply the techniques and expertise he gained to the family’s oil palm plantation. He actively assisted in managing the plantation, incorporating the practices he had learned. This not only contributed to enhancing the plantation’s productivity but also served as a testament to Prat’s capabilities, earning him the recognition he deserved within his family. Furthermore, it strengthened the bond between Prat and his family members.

Prior to Prat’s involvement with the SPOPP project, the family’s oil palm plantation yielded an average of only 3 tons/rai/year. However, after implementing improved management practices over two years, the yield has significantly increased to an average of 5-6 tons/rai/year. This remarkable improvement has translated into a substantial boost in the family’s income coupled with reduced production costs. Prat’s mother, Thunchanok Ketnui, is immensely proud of her son’s accomplishments. She had initially doubted his ability to contribute to the family’s palm oil business, perceiving him as uninterested in the field and different from other sons in their community. However, Prat’s dedication and the positive impact on the family’s business have undoubtedly proven his capabilities.

Prat stands as a beacon of pride for the SPOPP project. His unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth has transformed him into a sought-after agricultural expert. As a trainer, he has empowered over 400 farmers across three districts in Chumphon Province with the knowledge and skills to adopt sustainable palm oil production practices. His dedication extends beyond the training sessions, as he actively engages with farmers and community members, providing mentorship and fostering a vibrant exchange of knowledge. Prat’s expertise and willingness to share his insights have earned him the trust and admiration of his peers. He has become a trusted advisor, readily accessible to address questions and concerns from farmers and those seeking guidance in sustainable palm oil cultivation. His unwavering commitment to uplifting his community has made him an inspiration to many, demonstrating the profound impact that individuals can have on those around them.

Prat’s inspiring story at the age of 32 serves as a powerful reminder that the agricultural profession knows no gender or gender identity limitations. It highlights the transformative power of embracing diversity and ensuring equal access to opportunities for developing agricultural knowledge. Prat’s words resonate deeply: “I am grateful to GIZ, Global Green Chemicals (GGC), and the SPOPP project for their unwavering support, inspiration, and for moulding me into the individual I am today, one who is widely recognised and respected. I want to leave you with this message: Regardless of your circumstances or whether others believe in you, if you open your mind to learning, are willing to put in the effort, have faith in yourself, prioritise what you want to achieve without harming others, and find joy in your work, you too can achieve success.”

SPOPP’s emphasis on inclusivity extends beyond the realm of knowledge exchange. The project actively promotes equal access to opportunities and resources for all participants, regardless of their background or identity. This commitment to equity ensures that every voice is heard, and every contribution valued, fostering a sense of ownership and shared responsibility for the future of agriculture.
